Update Facebook Twitter Myspace

update facebook twitter myspace
no Facebook, Myspace nor Twitter…?

Here’s my theory, i have a lot of friends, and i think the best way to contact them is call them not text them or update my twitter. Why do people want to talk to their friends online when they could talk to them personally. I understand the PS3 concept (play games with your friends) but that’s different, why don’t they just call them.

FYI: i am 16 years old, go ahead say bad comments, does not bother me, i will not do anything about it (it will not be reported), just be honest, show your honesty!

Do you think that stuff is necessary?
playing games on facebook and having a facebook is okay, but you don’t have to make it take over your life, just call your friends and meet them, if they are far way-to me that’s fine, but they live near you or a state next you, just call them!

In a way, I agree with you, although I also have to say that each form of contact has its purpose, and the “best way” depends on the situation. If you have a lot of friends and you want to announce one thing to all of them, making a Facebook or Twitter post is preferable to calling each person individually. On the whole, however, most things that people post on those sites are not really important news, and it generally seems like it’s just a way to feel self-important, like “Hey everybody! Take a second to read what I’m doing right now!” Sure, sharing random facts is something we all do when we’re with friends, but when you do it in person it’s spontaneous. Doing it online, when you’re alone in a room sitting in front of a computer, suggests that it’s at least somewhat articulated, a plea for attention.

It doesn’t surprise me that young people like to text one another. Texting is like passing notes during class. You can communicate with a person a small amount at a time while doing other things. It can also be useful to pass on information that doesn’t necessarily require a phone call. “Meet me at the bar at 6″, for example, tells the person everything they need to know without having to dial, wait for them to answer, go through all the “Hello, hi, how are you…okay, see you then, bye” formalities that a phone call entails. But texting something to someone every 2 minutes from morning to evening is absurd, not to mention an unhealthy habit.

The phone may have become awkward for some people who feel they aren’t good at talking on it and have become used to communicating without it. This might suggest social awkwardness in general, but not necessarily. I find it’s easier to talk with someone in person rather than on the phone, because when you’re together you can be doing other things while talking, like walking, eating, shopping, and both of you can comment on things that are going on around you, but on the phone you’re concentrating entirely on talking to the person, which is not entirely natural. It’s common to have awkward silences between you and the person on the other end just minutes into the conversation, and nobody really likes that.

Bottom line: all things, be they phone, texting, facebook, twitter, etc. should ultimately lead you to actually being WITH the people you communicate with. If these things take you AWAY from the people you should be socializing with, you have no real social life at all. Unless they are friends or family who live far away and you can’t see regularly, but even then you should make time for people who live near you. Our means of communication should bring us together, not separate us.
