Site redirecting since I got new Wi-Fi modem?
I got a WRT160N Cisco modem a few months ago. Ever since I got it installed and working my browser has been redirecting me to different sites. It doesn’t happen all the time, in fact it rarely happens. When it does, though, it could redirect me from…
Facebook –> Myspace
Twitter –> random blog
Yahoo Answers –> Myspace
etc
Why is this happening? I scanned for viruses using both Avast Free Antivirus & Avira AntiVir Personal – Free Antivirus. Both recommended by CNET and many others on the internet. Nothing came up…
This could be caused by 2 problems:
A) Your router is infected with a virus
B) Your computer is infected with a virus
What I’d do is to first Re-Install the firmware on your router. This is basically like wiping the OS of your router and installing a new one – which should remove any virsues from it. Cisco / Linksys are very good with firmware updates, and you should just go to their site, find your router model and then download all the updates it has. It will tell you what to do.
After you’ve done that, you need to make sure your PC is not infected with any viruses. A common virus that tends to redirect your web browser is one called “Google Redirect Virus”. This virus is continually being used to redirect your search results and other websites to fake ones, in order to try and get the hackers who made it some money. This virus is very common, and can be fixed by using this tutorial: http://www.personalcomputerfixes.com/spyware/how-to-remove-the-google-redirect-virus/
