Stop a Windows XP user account from using a program?
How can I set a limit account to not access some programs? I’d love to set up an account for study/work where I cannot access MSN, Twitter client, games, etc.
Is this possible? Many thanks for serious replies.
THIS IS THE STRAIGHTFORWARD WAY
Open your registry and find the key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
Current Verison
Policies
Explorer
Create a new DWORD value and name it "DisallowRun" set the value to "1" to enable application restrictions or "0" to allow all applications to run.
Then create a new sub-key called [HKEY_CURRENT_USER
Software
Microsoft
Windows
CurrentVersion
Policies
Explorer
DisallowRun]
and define the applications the are to be restricted. Creating a new string value for each application, named as consecutive numbers, and setting the value to the filename to be restriced (e.g. “regedit.exe”).
Restart Windows for the changes to take effect.
If you’re afraid to mess with the registry (dont be) THERE’S ANOTHER WAY
Create a limited user account for yourself (this will be the restricted account)
Install the program while logged on as an administrator. When you install a program on xp it creates start menu items and desktop shortcuts for the USER WHO INSTALLED it and for ALL OTHER USERS. They are stored in C:documents and settingsall usersstart menuprograms folder, and ……desktop folder too if the program cretes desktop shortcuts.
What you have to do is delete the related program icons from this all users folder and they will be inaccessible for all other users except the user who installed it. Similarly you can allow any other user accounts to use the program by copying the program icons to their start menu folder.
The above is for restricting programs/games. To restrict webisites, install a firewall and block them.
