Lady Gaga is easily the most popular of the two, but Katy’s song “California Gurls” is the song of summer 2010, “I Kissed a Girl” was a massive hit back in 2008, and she has more main stream success and radio play than Gaga.
Gaga has 10+ million followers on Twitter and Facebook and her songs are some of the most watched on YouTube. She is a very polarizing person, and there are a lot of people who don’t like her. A lot of her popularity comes from her mystique, and the question of whether or not she’s a he.
(Note: by “more mainstream success” i mean more widely accepted, more coverage, and more play by the general population.)
