ANY REGULAR T WITTER USERS? : Can you explain what you do with it and how you get the most out of it?

I joined up about a year ago. Added several celebrities to follow. Got 5-6 friends following me none of whom use twitter more than 2-3 times a year.

Now what?

I can see people like Stephen fry twe eting about his minute by minute daily experiences eg getting on a plane etc

I am fascinated by it but I really cannot see what all the fuss is about?? Have I got to follow random strangers and comment on their tweets so they can reciprocate the honour just for the sake of it??
I like history , science, wines, travelling and other stuff.
How do you enjoy using it or Is it just status updates for vain celebrity egos ??

OK this is an interesting question. What’s the best way to use Twitter?

Essentially, there are two ways of using Twitter and I guess two types of Twitter user.
One purpose is to collect as many followers as is possible. A reason for doing this, other than to receive acknowledgement from your peers by displaying your Herculean popularity skills; might be if you were a company. The outside world’s perception of you might be more favourable if it was shown that your corporation had support from the wider community. This could impact positively on your company and its product’s perception. Whether it would have a direct affect on sales would need to be quantified but there would be various metrics you could introduce within your organisation to test any sales uplift from Twitter popularities. If anyone knows any companies that have demonstrated a sales uplift through Twitter use this woule be interesting to hear about.

The second way of using Twitter is as a communications tool. I guess you use SMS? And you may have a smart phone, which are becoming ubiquitous. Well, Twitter alerts are very similar to SMS. An’@’ message to a friend could be ‘see you in twenty minutes at the Red Lion in Hoxton Square’ thus becoming a free way to contact a friend you were meeting rather than using your telecoms network to send an SMS, which might incur a cost. Another friend on your Twitter network could pick up this ‘@’ and maybe another and then there are 4 of you meeting at the Red Lion and lo and behold a good night is had by all. Using the Twitter in the second way requires evangelisation on your part to get a number of friends using the service so such benefits become apparent.

Beyond this, your Twitter homepage can look like meaningless garbage if you attempt to build a profile for the means of looking popoular, because you will constantly be dealing with an endless amount of spam updates that you’re not interested in. I made this mistake on my twitter account which is: twitter.com/camperbugz and am going to be spending the next week or two removing the pointless individuals that I have followed because I hope they follow me back! My life’s to short to be sifting through crap on the net.
