Deconstruct the poem Acceptance – Robert Frost?
Acceptance ~ Robert Frost
When the spent sun throws up its rays on cloud
And goes down burning into the gulf below,
No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud
At what has happened. Birds, at least must know
It is the change to darkness in the sky.
Murmuring something quiet in her breast,
One bird begins to close a faded eye;
Or overtaken too far from his nest,
Hurrying low above the grove, some waif
Swoops just in time to his remembered tree.
At most he thinks or twitters softly, ‘Safe!
Now let the night be dark for all of me.
Let the night be too dark for me to see
Into the future. Let what will be, be.

Basically, when the sun casts it rays on clouds and sheds glowing light on the gulf below, everything becomes quiet in the natural world. At least birds can tell the impending change to dark night. Softly whistling one bird begins to close her eyes in repose, others who were far from their nests begin hurrying over the gulf, some swooping along the bay as they try to recall and locate the tree that holds their nests. The basic concern one bird softly twitters is being ‘safe!’
Now the night can embrace darkness for all. Let the night be too dark for everyone to see what is in store for the future. Let whatever the future holds be whatever it will be.
Imagery – “No voice in nature is heard to cry aloud,” sun “burning into the gulf below”
aural imagery – “safe!” and “Let what will be, be”
symbols – the one bird refers to the speaker
irony – “in time to his remembered tree” Was he not there!!
Theme/allusion – Accept the present as it is for we know not what the future holds. The phrase: “Let what will be, be” alludes to sense of resignation and acceptance of natural circumstances without undue worries or anxieties.
