With a 500 MB data plan for my Blackberry Bold 9780, can I use the Facebook,Twitter and BBM apps while being?
covered by the data plan? Or do I need to have a social network plan also?

Yes, it will be enough since you don’t use much of the data you have. 500MB = 0.5GB
I have 200MB of data on my phone and I surf the internet ( Facebook, Twitter, YouTube etc..)
and I mostly use Wi-Fi on my phone whenever I’m home or at a local Wi-Fi hotspot instead of using data. I do recommend not to stream videos and music while using data because it eats up internet a lot.
