Why does Twitter use TinyURL and other url shorteners?
Why is Twitter using url shortening websites for their links, instead of actually showing the link?
Because there is a 140 character limit for your updates, and many links will use up most or all of those characters (or even go longer than 140 characters, thus not even fitting in your update). This leaves little to no room for a description or comment about that link you just posted, which is unhelpful for your followers. True, you could just follow with a second update that provides info. about the link, but this is a bit distracting; however, with a URL shortener, you have ample room for both the shortened link and a comment on it all in one simple update!
