How does Twitter decide when to award the ‘Verified Account’ badge for a celebrity?
Firstly, do you know if Twitter contacts the celebrity to verify it’s really them? Or, does the celebrity contact Twitter to confirm this verification? How does this process work? Also, does it depend on the number of followers you have?
Do you think that by labeling an account as ‘Verified’, that Twitter is kind of playing the role of deciding who is in the upper echelon of fame and who is not? I see that most celebrities, movie stars, musicians, famous athletes, politicians, corporations, etc. have ‘Verified Accounts’. But, there are other people in the public eye who have some level of fame, but they don’t have ‘Verified Accounts’. For example, some mid-level professional athletes (NBA, NHL, MLB, etc.) have Twitter accounts and it’s really them, but they don’t have the ‘Verified Accounts’ label.
So, how does this work?
It’s up to Twitter, and they’re not verifying *any* accounts at this time: they’re apparently working on a new system.
The number of followers has never been relevant.
