Are Gilbert Gottfried’s twitter posts in bad taste?
He got fired from Aflac over making bad jokes about the Japan tragedy.

wow, he sucks.
Two of his tweets can be seen here (they’ve been deleted from his timeline): http://www.tmz.com/2011/03/14/gilbert-gottfried-japan-roasts-jokes-tsunami/
According to Reuters, Aflac derives 75% (or 3/4ths) of its total income from Japan. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/03/15/us-aflac-tweets-odds-idUSTRE72E65Z20110315
Japan culture is quite different than American/Western culture, and making any sort of jokes about such a situation is seen in the poorest of tastes. Indeed, CNN reports that Gottfried was contacted by the Japanese government, which told him that they were not in the least bit amused by his jokes that appeared on Twitter. http://www.cnn.com/2011/BUSINESS/03/14/georgia.aflac.duck/index.html?iref=NS1
FOX reports that Gottfried isn’t the only fallout from poor taste in tweeting about Japan: rapper 50-Cent is in the middle of a media uproar over some of his tweets concerning Japan http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2011/03/14/50-cent-mocks-japans-earthquake-victims-tweets/
There’s little doubt in my mind that the Japanese government contacted Aflac about this situation, which further prompted Aflac’s move.
When comedians like Kathy Griffin, who are well-known for saying things that get them into trouble, keep their mouths shut about situations (in terms of making jokes about them), it’s a pretty clear indication that any sort of joke-making is NOT a good idea….
