How much money do musicians/authors get when you buy their work from Amazon?

When you buy a CD or book from Amazon, how much does the author/artist get? How does the system work and is it better to buy from somewhere like HMV if you want to make sure the majority of what you pay goes to the artist?
between 30 cent to $2 each. It does not seem a lot, but multiply it by millions.
